How Local Bacteria Keep a Common Yeast in Check
The evidence here is moderate, built on laboratory and observational research rather than large clinical trials.
A vaginal yeast infection is usually caused by Candida albicans, a fungus that lives harmlessly in the body most of the time but can overgrow under the right conditions.
Bacteria living in the same environment appear to play a genuine role in keeping that yeast in check.
Lactobacillus physically competes with the yeast for space
A study comparing women with recurring yeast infections to healthy women found a shift away from Lactobacillus crispatus, a particularly protective bacterial species, and toward a different species, Lactobacillus iners, that offers less protection.
Laboratory testing showed Lactobacillus could directly block Candida albicans from forming biofilms, sticky, structured colonies of yeast cells that are much harder for the immune system or medication to clear than free-floating yeast.
Across the data, Lactobacillus levels were consistently linked to lower Candida levels and to fewer, more widely spaced infection episodes, regardless of whether someone currently had symptoms.

Antibiotics are a known trigger, and the gut probably isn't the source
Antibiotics that disrupt the vaginal bacterial community are a well-documented trigger for yeast overgrowth, since they remove the Lactobacillus that would normally compete with Candida for space and resources.
A separate small study asked a specific, useful question. Is recurring yeast infection seeded from a reservoir of Candida in the gut, reinfecting the vagina over and over? Comparing the exact yeast strains at both sites found this wasn't generally the case. The vaginal and gut Candida populations were usually distinct.
That's a useful, honest finding. It points attention toward the local vaginal bacterial community as the main protective factor, rather than the gut being the hidden source of repeat infections.

Adding a probiotic to antifungal treatment measurably helps
A meta-analysis of randomised trials found adding a Lactobacillus probiotic to standard antifungal treatment improved short-term cure rates by 14%, and cut the one-month relapse rate by 66% compared with antifungal treatment alone.
As with any probiotic, this only works if the bacteria introduced are properly fed afterwards. A Lactobacillus strain added alongside antifungal treatment still needs fibre and plant compounds to establish itself well enough to keep competing with Candida over the following weeks and months.
The trials behind this finding were rated low quality individually, mostly small and short, so this is a genuinely promising addition rather than a settled, first-line treatment on its own.
