Chewing changes what reaches the gut, and what lives there


Tooth loss doesn't just affect the mouth. It changes what a person can comfortably eat, and that shift has knock-on effects further down the digestive tract. People who have lost most or all of their teeth consistently eat fewer fruits, vegetables, and fibre-rich foods than people with a full set, and lower amounts of key nutrients including calcium and vitamin C and D, according to large-scale surveys including the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Softer, more processed, carbohydrate-heavy foods are simply easier to manage without a full working bite.

The gut microbiome shifts too


A study that removed the molar teeth of mice found the effects reached well beyond the mouth. Oral bacterial diversity dropped, but so did the diversity and balance of gut bacteria, with the ratio between two major bacterial groups, Firmicutes and Bacteroidota, shifting in the gut as a direct, measurable consequence. The researchers found correlations between the specific oral bacteria that changed and the specific gut bacteria that changed, suggesting the two are connected rather than just two separate effects of the same underlying cause.

This connection is particularly relevant for older adults, who are already more vulnerable to nutritional gaps and to a less diverse gut microbiome. Reduced chewing ability, combined with existing age-related shifts in gut bacteria, compounds a problem that starts with the teeth but plays out throughout the digestive system, contributing to malnutrition risk that's already elevated in older age groups.
