The Bacteria Living in Your Sinuses Matter More Than You'd Think


There's a genuinely strong, causally tested finding here, built on both human comparison and a confirming animal experiment.


Chronic sinusitis is long-term inflammation of the nasal and sinus passages, and it's often treated as a purely mechanical or allergic problem.


A landmark study found the bacteria living in the sinuses themselves play a direct, causal role.


People with chronic sinusitis had a specific, depleted bacterial pattern


Researchers compared the sinus microbiome of people with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) against healthy people and found significantly reduced bacterial diversity in the CRS group.


Multiple different lactic acid bacteria were depleted together, while one particular species, Corynebacterium tuberculostearicum, was found in far greater relative numbers in the CRS group.


This wasn't a single bacterium replacing a healthy community. It was a whole group of protective species disappearing at once, leaving room for one less helpful species to dominate.

A mouse experiment confirmed this wasn't just a coincidence


To test whether this pattern actually caused disease, researchers depleted the sinus microbiome in mice and introduced Corynebacterium tuberculostearicum directly. This reliably triggered sinus inflammation.


They then tested one of the depleted species, Lactobacillus sakei, on its own. Introducing it alongside the harmful bacterium protected the mice from developing sinusitis, even though the rest of their sinus bacterial community was still missing.


This is a strong result. One specific, identifiable bacterial species was enough to prevent disease on its own, which is a more convincing form of evidence than simply observing that diversity happened to be lower in sick people.

Most sinus infections are treated with antibiotics they don't need


Around 90 to 98% of acute sinus infections are viral, yet more than 80% of adults diagnosed with acute sinusitis in the US are prescribed antibiotics.


This matters for the same reason it does with bronchitis. Antibiotics don't distinguish between harmful bacteria and the protective species, including the lactic acid bacteria shown above to guard against sinus infection, so an unnecessary prescription risks removing the very community that helps prevent the problem recurring.


Given that a single depleted protective species was enough to cause disease in the mouse experiments above, repeatedly disrupting that same community with antibiotics that were never needed looks like a genuine, avoidable risk factor.
