Perimenopause, the transitional years leading up to menopause, involves pronounced swings in oestrogen and progesterone that are distinct from the more stable, lower hormone levels of full menopause. An honest gap: mostly theory so far, with trials now catching up


A review of the evidence describes a biologically plausible set of mechanisms connecting gut bacteria, inflammation, and neuroendocrine pathways to perimenopausal anxiety, but is upfront that randomised controlled trials specifically in perimenopausal women remain limited. This is a genuine, active gap being addressed directly: a new research partnership between the University of Oxford's Department of Psychiatry and a probiotics manufacturer has enrolled its first participant in an 8-week trial testing a 14-strain probiotic supplement specifically for emotional and cognitive symptoms in 106 perimenopausal women.
