The Cancer That Can Be Cured by Treating a Bacterium


There's strong evidence here, resting on one of the more remarkable, well-established findings in all of cancer medicine.


Lymphoma is cancer that starts in the lymphatic system, the network of tissues and organs that forms part of the immune system, and it comes in many different forms.


One specific type is directly caused by a gut bacterium, and treating that bacterium alone can cure it.


A stomach cancer, cured by antibiotics alone


Gastric MALT lymphoma is a slow-growing cancer of the stomach lining, and the large majority of cases are directly linked to infection with Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that lives in the stomach and is more commonly known for causing ulcers.


A multicentre study following 420 patients in Japan found that simply eradicating H. pylori with standard antibiotics achieved long-term remission in around 70% of cases, with no chemotherapy or radiotherapy needed at all.


A specific genetic marker, a chromosomal rearrangement called t(11;18), reliably predicts who won't respond to antibiotics alone, giving doctors a real, practical way to identify which patients need additional treatment from the outset.


The underlying mechanism is fairly well understood too. Chronic H. pylori infection drives ongoing, low-grade immune stimulation in the stomach lining, and it's thought this persistent stimulation is what eventually pushes some immune cells there toward becoming cancerous. Removing the bacterium removes that constant trigger.

Gut bacteria also shape how well modern lymphoma treatment works


CAR T-cell therapy is a newer treatment that reprogrammes a patient's own immune cells to attack their cancer, and it's increasingly used for lymphoma that hasn't responded to standard treatment.


A study following 172 people with lymphoma receiving this treatment found that broad-spectrum antibiotics given beforehand were linked to lower gut bacterial diversity and worse treatment outcomes.


A more detailed analysis of patients who hadn't received antibiotics still found gut bacteria composition predicted outcomes. People with higher levels of Bifidobacterium longum, a common beneficial gut bacterium, had longer overall survival after treatment.
