A gut compound that calms the airways
The research connecting lung inflammation to gut bacteria is still at an early stage, but it centres on one specific, well studied compound. Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid, made when gut bacteria ferment fibre. In laboratory studies, giving mice dietary fibre, and the butyrate their gut bacteria made from it, reduced the activity of specific immune cells that drive airway inflammation and over-reactive airways. These cells are called ILC2s, short for group 2 innate lymphoid cells, a type of immune cell involved in allergic and inflammatory responses in the lungs. Germ-free mice, raised with no gut bacteria at all, showed the same calming effect once they were given butyrate-producing bacteria directly.

The same mechanism, in COPD and in human patients
A follow-up study found butyrate reduced the same kind of airway inflammation in mouse models of COPD, not just in models of allergic, asthma-like reactions. That suggests this is a general airway mechanism, rather than something specific to one condition. That study also identified part of how butyrate works at a cellular level. It blocks enzymes called histone deacetylases, which changes how genes involved in inflammation get switched on or off inside immune cells, damping down the signals that drive airway inflammation. The human evidence is more limited, but it points the same way. A metagenome-wide study of UK adults with asthma found specific butyrate-producing bacteria, including Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, were depleted compared with healthy people. That same study found changes in genes involved in how the gut microbiome makes short-chain fatty acids, tying the animal mechanism to something measurable in real patients.

What this means for you
This research is still mostly at a laboratory and early human-observation stage, so it should not be read as proof that fibre alone treats lung inflammation. Any diagnosed lung condition needs treatment through a doctor, not diet alone. Persistent wheezing, chest tightness, or breathlessness that does not settle need medical assessment. What this evidence does support is that fibre-fermenting gut bacteria are an active, measurable part of the body's inflammation control system.
