Researchers studying gut bacteria and ageing discovered that mice regularly consuming Lactobacillus reuteri had significantly larger testes, increased testosterone levels, and more active sperm-producing cells compared with mice not given the bacterium, an effect linked to the strain's anti-inflammatory properties. This is a genuinely striking, well-documented finding, and it's the kind of result that reasonably generates excitement about gut bacteria and male hormone health.

An honest result: the human trial found no effect


When this exact strain was tested directly in people, the result was different. A 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial gave men aged 55 to 65 either a high or low dose of Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC PTA 6475, or placebo. The researchers concluded plainly that the study did not support the idea that this probiotic strain increases testosterone levels in ageing men, at either dose. This is exactly the kind of honest, direct human trial result that matters more than an exciting animal finding, and it's worth taking seriously rather than glossing over.

A genuinely open research question


A broader review of gut bacteria and testosterone in men found several genuine correlations between specific bacterial taxa and hormone levels, but concluded that identifying which bacteria are most useful, and testing them properly in clinical trials, remains an open task for future research rather than settled science.


What this means for you


Low testosterone needs proper diagnosis through blood testing and a doctor's assessment, since causes vary and treatment, including testosterone replacement therapy where appropriate, should be guided medically rather than through supplements. Based on the direct human trial evidence above, it isn't currently reasonable to expect a specific probiotic to raise testosterone levels, despite the promising animal research behind it.
