A large trial with a genuine, broad symptom improvement
A randomised, placebo-controlled trial gave 463 people with long COVID symptoms either a synbiotic, a combination of live bacteria and the fibre that feeds them, or a placebo for six months. Improvements in digestive complaints were reported by 70.2% of people taking the synbiotic, compared with 54.1% of people on placebo, who received vitamin C instead. After accounting for the number of comparisons made, the synbiotic group showed significantly greater improvement in five separate symptoms: digestive problems, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, and a general sense of unwellness.
