A European study tracking over 100 patients found a distinct gut bacteria signature tied specifically to the hyperthyroid state itself, separate from the autoimmune process that usually causes it.

Separating the hormone excess from its usual cause
Hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid producing too much hormone, is most commonly caused by Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition, though it can have other causes too. A large multicentre European study tracking gut bacteria in patients with Graves' disease found something methodologically useful: it was able to separate gut bacteria changes tied to the autoimmune process itself from changes tied simply to being in an active hyperthyroid state.

A consistent bacterial shift during active hyperthyroidism
Across studies, an excess of thyroid hormone is consistently linked to an increased ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes bacteria in the gut, alongside reduced overall bacterial diversity. Gut bacteria also appear to influence thyroid hormone levels directly, since bacterial enzymes affect how thyroid hormone is recycled through the gut and liver, a two-way relationship where the hyperthyroid state reshapes the gut, and the gut may in turn influence how much hormone re-enters circulation.
An honest note on treatment evidence
