What the Gut Has to Do With Hormones in General
Before anything else, one clarification is worth making, because it changes how to read the rest. Hormone imbalance is not a medical diagnosis. It is a phrase covering many separate conditions with different causes and different tests. So there is no body of research on the gut and hormone imbalance as such. What exists is evidence on the gut and several individual hormone systems, and those studies keep landing on the same few shared routes. Understanding those routes is more useful than looking for a single answer, because it explains why the gut turns up in so many different hormone stories.
Route one, the gut decides what gets sent back
The first shared route is disposal. The liver takes hormones the body has finished with, tags them chemically so they can be excreted, and sends them into the gut in bile, the fluid the liver produces to help digest fat.
Gut bacteria can remove that tag. A hormone with the tag removed becomes active again and is reabsorbed into the bloodstream instead of leaving the body. So the same enzyme activity that determines how much of a hormone is thrown away also determines how much comes back.
How fast things move through the gut matters here too. One study altered intestinal transit speed in healthy women and measured the effect. Speeding transit up lowered oestrogen concentrations in the blood. Wheat bran also produced a fall, alongside a trend towards faster transit. Less time in the gut meant less opportunity for reabsorption.

Route two, the gut sets the stress thermostat early
The second route is different in kind. Rather than handling hormones after the fact, gut bacteria appear to help build the system that produces them.
Researchers compared mice raised with no gut bacteria against normally raised mice. When both groups were briefly restrained, the germ-free mice released substantially more corticosterone, the main stress hormone in mice, and more of the pituitary signal that triggers it.
Giving those mice a single bacterial species, Bifidobacterium infantis, reversed the exaggerated response. Timing was decisive. The correction worked when bacteria arrived early in life, and much less well when they arrived later.
That points to something structural. Early bacterial exposure appears to help calibrate how strongly the stress hormone system fires, and once calibrated it is not easily reset.

Route three, the traffic runs both ways
The third point is that hormones shape bacteria as much as bacteria shape hormones, which makes single-direction claims unreliable.
A systematic review pulled together the human studies measuring sex hormone levels alongside gut bacterial composition. Across those studies, hormone levels tracked with both the variety of bacteria present and which particular groups dominated. The associations were consistent enough to be taken seriously and too tangled to assign a direction.
This is why claims that a supplement will rebalance your hormones through the gut should be treated with suspicion. The relationships are real. Their direction, in humans, is mostly unresolved.

What this means for you
So the picture is not that the gut balances hormones. It is that the gut sits inside several hormone systems at once, controlling how much of a hormone is recycled rather than excreted, helping calibrate the stress response early in life, and shifting in composition as hormone levels themselves change. Symptoms people attribute to hormone imbalance, including persistent fatigue, cycle changes, unexplained weight change or low mood, have specific testable causes, so the useful first step is a doctor and a blood test rather than a supplement. Alongside that, the two things food genuinely influences here are transit speed and the bacteria doing the recycling, and fibre is what drives both.
