A gut connection distinct from cholesterol alone


High triglycerides are a type of fat circulating in the blood and a recognised cardiovascular risk factor. Gut bacteria influence them through mechanisms that are at least partly separate from those affecting cholesterol. Circulating blood lipids, including triglycerides, are substantially shaped by gut bacteria composition. Certain bacterial genera have been specifically linked to variation in triglyceride levels between people, independent of diet alone.

A specific receptor that controls the tap


Part of the mechanism runs through bile acids. Several gut bacteria genera, including Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium, help metabolise these bile acids. Bile acids activate a receptor in the liver and gut called FXR. When this receptor is switched on, it reduces the liver's production of very-low-density lipoprotein, or VLDL, the particle that carries the bulk of the body's triglycerides into the bloodstream. This gives a specific, testable reason why shifting gut bacteria composition could turn down triglyceride production at its source, not just correlate with lower levels.


A real trial with concrete, specific numbers


A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial gave 100 overweight adults with mild high triglycerides either a combination of two specific strains, Latilactobacillus curvatus HY7601 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum KY1032, or placebo for 12 weeks. The probiotic group's triglycerides dropped from an average of 158.6 to 139.5 mg/dL. LDL cholesterol fell from 129.2 to 111.3 mg/dL. Both changes were statistically significant. The placebo group showed no meaningful change in either. The probiotic group also saw a significant increase in apolipoprotein CII, a protein involved in breaking down triglycerides, and a reduction in fasting glucose.

As with any probiotic, this combination only worked as part of a properly fed gut ecosystem. These strains still need fibre and plant compounds from the wider diet. Without that support, they have far less chance of establishing themselves, and their effect on triglyceride and cholesterol processing fades as they simply pass through and die out.


An honest note: not every strain works the same way


A broader meta-analysis of Lactobacillus strains found that several reduced total and LDL cholesterol significantly. Most, though, had no significant effect on triglycerides specifically. The exception was synbiotic combinations that paired live bacteria with a prebiotic fibre source. This is a useful, honest distinction: triglyceride-lowering appears to depend on the specific strain, or strain combination, used, rather than being a universal effect of any probiotic.

What this means for you


High triglycerides need proper diagnosis through blood testing. Standard treatment, including dietary changes to reduce refined carbohydrates and alcohol, weight management, and medication where needed, remains essential, particularly for significantly elevated levels.
