Bacterial byproducts that act like blood pressure medication


Certain gut bacteria strains, including Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium lactis, produce compounds that inhibit an enzyme called ACE, angiotensin-converting enzyme, the same enzyme targeted by a well-established class of prescription blood pressure medications. This gives a genuinely specific, plausible mechanism for how gut bacteria could lower blood pressure, rather than a vague, general wellness claim.


A consistent, real effect across dozens of trials


A meta-analysis of 23 randomised controlled trials, covering 2,037 people, found that probiotics reduced systolic blood pressure by an average of 3.05 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 1.51 mmHg compared with placebo. This effect was significant specifically in people who already had high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes, and a separate meta-analysis of 26 trials found a similar reduction using both home and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, a more rigorous way of measuring real-world blood pressure over a full day.

As with any probiotic, these ACE-inhibiting effects depend on the bacteria being properly fed. A strain given to help manage blood pressure still needs fibre and plant compounds to establish itself well enough to keep producing these blood pressure-lowering compounds.


An honest note on the size of the effect
