The Gut's Surprising Link to a Nervous System Virus


This is still an early, developing area of research, built mostly on animal studies rather than large human trials.


Herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes cold sores or genital sores and stays dormant in nerve cells for life once someone is infected.


In its most severe form, HSV can spread to the brain, and animal research suggests gut bacteria play a real role in how badly that goes.


A gut molecule calmed brain inflammation from the virus


Herpes simplex encephalitis is a rare but severe brain infection that can follow HSV, and mice infected with the virus were used to study what protects against it.


Mice with their gut bacteria wiped out by antibiotics developed worse brain inflammation and higher levels of virus in the brain than mice with normal gut bacteria.


Researchers traced this to a molecule called nicotinamide N-oxide (NAMO), made mainly by two gut bacteria, Lactobacillus gasseri and Lactobacillus reuteri. NAMO travels from the gut to the brain and activates a cell recycling process called mitophagy inside immune cells there, which calms an overactive immune response and protects brain tissue from damage even as the immune system fights the virus.

A different gut bacterium showed a similar protective effect


A separate research group found a similar pattern using a different bacterium. A molecule from Bacteroides fragilis, a common gut bacterium, called capsular polysaccharide A (PSA), encouraged immune cells to release a calming signal that reduced brain inflammation during herpes infection in mice.


Two separate gut bacteria, studied by two separate research groups, both pointed to the same underlying idea. The gut can supply signals that keep the brain's immune response from overreacting to this particular virus.

Genetic evidence hints at a role in shingles reactivation too


A related virus in the same family, varicella-zoster, causes chickenpox and then shingles when it reactivates later in life. A genetic study looking for causal links found two specific gut bacteria groups associated with a higher chance of shingles reactivation.


This kind of genetic evidence can't prove cause and effect on its own, but it points in the same direction as the mouse studies. Gut bacteria composition may influence how well the body keeps these dormant viruses under control.

What this means for you


Herpes needs a doctor's assessment for diagnosis and antiviral treatment, and severe symptoms like confusion or a stiff neck need urgent medical attention. In addition, the research above shows gut bacteria appear to shield the brain from some of the worst effects of this virus in animal studies, through specific, identifiable molecules.
