A plausible link through excess oestrogen


Heavy menstrual bleeding, or menorrhagia, is often driven by excess oestrogen relative to progesterone, which causes the womb lining to build up more than usual before it sheds. An emerging idea, not yet proven for heavy periods specifically


Researchers have proposed that an overactive estrobolome, particularly from an overgrowth of certain beta-glucuronidase-producing bacteria, can lead to excess oestrogen reabsorption, and this has been linked to other oestrogen-driven conditions including fibroids and endometriosis. It's honest to say that direct research tying this mechanism specifically to heavy menstrual bleeding, as opposed to oestrogen-driven conditions more broadly, is still thin, and this remains a plausible extension of the theory rather than a proven cause.


Iron loss compounds the problem


Separate from any hormonal link, heavy bleeding itself has a well-established, direct gut consequence: iron deficiency. Studies screening women for heavy menstrual bleeding consistently find a strong association with iron deficiency and anaemia, since heavy blood loss depletes iron stores faster than a typical diet replaces them.
