A compound that keeps mattering after the event itself


Heart attacks are closely linked to TMAO, the gut bacteria-produced compound that promotes atherosclerosis and blood clotting, and research shows this connection doesn't end once the acute event is over. Following a heart attack, TMAO can actually rise further during recovery, even as patients receive standard secondary prevention treatment.


A striking, long-term prognostic finding


A study following 112 patients after a specific type of heart attack, called STEMI, measured TMAO both at the time of the event and again 10 months later. TMAO levels significantly increased over that period, and critically, the TMAO level measured months later, not the level at the time of the heart attack itself, independently predicted future cardiovascular events over more than 5 years of follow-up. This suggests TMAO reflects something about a patient's ongoing risk that's distinct from the acute event.

A distinct gut bacteria signature, even in young patients


Separate research comparing young men who'd had a specific type of heart attack against healthy young men without heart disease found distinct gut bacteria differences between the groups, and researchers were able to build a predictive model combining gut bacteria data with clinical information, suggesting gut bacteria patterns could eventually help identify at-risk younger patients who don't fit the typical risk profile.

Recovering from a heart attack needs close, ongoing cardiology care, including standard secondary prevention medications like statins, blood thinners, and blood pressure treatment, none of which this research changes.
