A meta-analysis of 30 trials and over 2,700 people found probiotics genuinely improved hay fever symptoms and quality of life, though not every measure improved.

A real, if partial, benefit across many trials
Hay fever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis, is an IgE-mediated immune reaction to airborne allergens like pollen, and gut bacteria are increasingly understood to help regulate this kind of allergic response through the balance between different types of immune cells. A meta-analysis pooling 30 randomised controlled trials, covering 2,708 patients, found that probiotics significantly improved both quality of life and nasal symptom severity in people with allergic rhinitis. Notably, the same analysis found no significant effect on eosinophil count, ocular symptoms, or IgE levels, an honest, partial result rather than a uniform win across every measure.

A named trial with a genuine quality-of-life signal
A 12-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial specifically testing a probiotic formula in adults with hay fever found improvements in day-to-day functioning, sleep quality, fatigue, thirst, and irritability in the treatment group. This kind of quality-of-life improvement, alongside symptom relief, is a meaningful outcome for a condition that affects daily functioning as much as it does physical symptoms.

As with any probiotic, this only works as part of a fed ecosystem. A strain taken during hay fever season still needs fibre and plant compounds from the wider diet to establish itself well enough to shift the underlying immune balance, rather than just passing through.
Prevention trials show a different, more limited picture
For preventing allergic rhinitis in children through probiotics given during pregnancy or infancy, the evidence is weaker. A meta-analysis of 14 trials covering nearly 6,000 children found probiotics didn't significantly reduce the odds of developing allergic rhinitis itself at any age, though they did modestly reduce the odds of atopic sensitisation, a lab marker of allergy risk, in children over 1 year old. Prevention and treatment appear to be genuinely different questions with different answers.
What this means for you
Hay fever is usually manageable with standard antihistamines, nasal sprays, or allergy testing to identify and reduce exposure to specific triggers, and these remain the established first-line approach.
