Why Erections Depend on Blood Vessel Health
The research here is emerging, and most of it concerns mechanisms rather than treatments. An erection is a vascular event. It depends on the lining of blood vessels, called the endothelium, releasing nitric oxide so that vessels widen and blood fills the tissue. Anything damaging that lining reduces the response. That's why erectile difficulties often appear years before a heart problem does, and it's the reason gut research has a route in.
The compound that damages vessel linings
Endotoxin is a component of the outer wall of certain gut bacteria. When the gut wall becomes more permeable, it crosses into the bloodstream, and the immune system treats it as an alarm signal.
Researchers measured two gut-derived compounds in men with erectile dysfunction, comparing groups by cause. Endotoxin was significantly higher in men whose difficulty was blood-vessel related than in the other groups.
The second compound they measured, trimethylamine N-oxide, showed no significant difference in that particular study, which is worth knowing because it's the compound most often named in this context.
Endotoxin acting on the vessel lining is well characterised elsewhere. It drives inflammation, reduces nitric oxide availability and impairs the ability of vessels to widen on demand.
So the finding fits the biology. The gut supplies a compound that damages exactly the tissue erections depend on.

Three other routes that have been proposed
Vascular damage is the clearest route. Reviews of this field describe three more.
The first is hormonal. Testosterone supports erectile function, and gut bacteria influence testosterone levels. One proposal, built around gut-derived endotoxin, holds that bacterial fragments reaching the bloodstream suppress the cells in the testes that produce the hormone, offering an explanation for low testosterone in men carrying excess weight.
The second is neurological. Erections are controlled largely by the parasympathetic nervous system, and its largest nerve is the vagus, which is also the main physical connection between gut and brain. Signalling in that nerve is influenced by gut bacteria, so a route exists in principle.
The third is chemical and unusually specific. One gut bacterium, Oscillibacter, produces valeric acid, a compound structurally similar to GABA. GABA receptor activation suppresses erection, so a high abundance of that organism has been proposed as a contributor.
That last one is a hypothesis built from separate pieces of biology rather than a finding, and it's worth reading as such.

What the evidence doesn't establish
Several limits deserve stating plainly.
No trial has changed gut bacteria in men with erectile dysfunction and measured what happened. Everything here is either comparison between groups or mechanism established in other tissues.
Direction is unresolved in the human comparisons. Erectile dysfunction travels with diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease, all of which alter gut bacteria independently. Studies finding different bacteria in affected men may be finding the effects of those conditions.
A genetic analysis using inherited variants to test causation has been attempted, which is the approach most likely to settle it, though this work is early.
What is not in doubt is that erectile difficulty is frequently the first sign of vascular disease elsewhere in the body, which makes it worth investigating rather than treating in isolation.
What this means for you
New erectile difficulty is worth taking to a doctor rather than treating privately, because it is often the earliest sign of cardiovascular disease and is highly treatable once assessed. In addition, the research above found bacterial endotoxin significantly raised in men whose difficulty was blood-vessel related, acting on the same vessel lining that erections depend on.
