A systematic review and meta-analysis of 46 randomised controlled trials, covering 3,516 participants, found that probiotic supplementation produced a statistically significant reduction in cortisol levels compared with placebo. The effect size was modest, and the researchers rated the overall certainty of evidence as low, honestly noting that more targeted studies are needed to understand which specific groups of people respond best.

A specific gut compound that directly calms the stress response
Separate research has tested short-chain fatty acids, compounds produced when gut bacteria ferment fibre, delivered directly into the colon in a rigorous, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
