Chronic low-grade inflammation is a persistent, mild immune activation that doesn't come with the obvious symptoms of an acute infection but is linked to a wide range of long-term health conditions. Gut bacteria influence this process directly, since fermenting dietary fibre produces short-chain fatty acids, compounds that help keep the immune system calm, while a disrupted gut barrier allows bacterial fragments into the bloodstream that can trigger ongoing low-level inflammation.


A real, if partial, effect from fibre specifically


A systematic review and meta-analysis of 25 randomised controlled trials in children and adolescents found dietary fibre interventions produced beneficial effects on several inflammatory markers, and a meta-analysis specifically of CRP levels across 10 of these trials found a statistically significant reduction. Notably, fibre supplements produced a significantly bigger reduction than simply eating more fibre-rich foods. The same analysis found no significant effect on two other inflammatory markers, interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha, an honest, partial result rather than a uniform anti-inflammatory effect across every marker measured.

Probiotics alone show a more mixed picture


A randomised trial combining a multi-strain probiotic with omega-3 and vitamin D in adults with overweight or obesity and existing low-grade inflammation found no overall improvement in CRP, though interleukin-6, a separate inflammatory marker, did decrease significantly. This is a useful reminder that gut-focused interventions don't move every inflammatory marker equally, and fibre appears to have a more consistent, direct effect on inflammation than probiotics taken alone.

What this means for you


Chronic inflammation itself isn't something to self-diagnose from symptoms alone, and if a doctor has flagged raised inflammatory markers on a blood test, it's worth investigating the underlying cause rather than assuming diet alone will resolve it. Given the meta-analysis evidence above, increasing dietary fibre, through both fibre-rich foods and, where appropriate, targeted supplementation, is a reasonable, well-evidenced way to support lower CRP levels specifically.
