Why more calcium intake alone doesn't solve everything
Simply eating more calcium doesn't guarantee more gets absorbed, since the percentage of calcium the gut actually takes up falls as intake rises. This is especially relevant after menopause, when declining oestrogen reduces intestinal calcium absorption and increases how much is lost through urine, contributing to bone loss over time. A randomised trial in postmenopausal women found calcium absorption rose by 5.1 percentage points with a prebiotic fibre blend, compared with a 3.3 percentage point fall on placebo, alongside early signs of a shift toward more bone formation relative to breakdown.

A longer trial, with a lasting effect
The most convincing evidence comes from a much larger and longer study. A year-long randomised trial in over 100 prepubescent children found that a prebiotic fibre blend increased mineral absorption within 8 weeks, and that this benefit was still measurable a full year later, showing up as genuinely enhanced bone mineralisation rather than a short-lived effect that faded once the novelty of a new fibre wore off.

What this means for you
