A plausible, still-preliminary mechanism


Over 70% of breast cancers are hormone receptor-positive, meaning they're driven in part by circulating oestrogen, and researchers have proposed that gut bacteria could influence this risk through the "estrobolome," a collection of bacterial genes that reactivate oestrogen in the intestines rather than letting it be excreted. Reviews of this research area are careful to describe it as "conceivable" and worth investigating as a potential biomarker, language reflecting real scientific caution rather than an established finding.

Early comparison studies, genuine limitations acknowledged


A case-control study compared the gut microbiome and hormone levels of postmenopausal women newly diagnosed with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer against healthy women, specifically to see whether the estrobolome differed between the groups. Separate reviews of the broader research area are explicit that significant gaps remain, including whether the bacterial genes involved are even actively expressed in humans the way they appear to be in animal studies, and note that only a narrow slice of the relevant biology has been studied in real depth so far.

What this research is not


This is genuinely useful, active research, but it is not evidence that a probiotic can prevent, treat, or reduce the risk of breast cancer, and no responsible reading of this research suggests changing screening or treatment decisions based on it.
