Researchers transplanted gut bacteria from people with social anxiety disorder into mice and gave those mice a heightened fear response, direct evidence the bacteria themselves play a causal role.

A Direct Transplant Experiment Linking Gut Bacteria to Fear
Anxiety has one of the more directly demonstrated gut connections among mental health conditions, thanks to a genuinely striking transplant experiment. Researchers took gut bacteria from people diagnosed with social anxiety disorder and transplanted it into mice that had never been exposed to any social stressor themselves. Those mice went on to show a distinctly heightened fear response in social situations, compared with mice given bacteria from people without the condition.
A causal experiment, not just an association
This transplant study is genuinely important because it goes beyond simply noting that gut bacteria differ between anxious and non-anxious people. By transferring the bacteria itself and watching a specific behaviour change follow, it demonstrates that gut bacteria can actively cause anxiety-like behaviour, at least in this animal model, rather than merely appearing alongside it. The mice given the social anxiety-associated bacteria also showed changes in immune function and in oxytocin, a hormone involved in social bonding and trust, in their brains, giving a specific, physical pathway connecting the transplanted bacteria to the behavioural change.

A genuine, if modest, effect from probiotics in real trials
That mechanistic finding is backed by real treatment trials too. A meta-analysis of 12 randomised controlled trials, covering 707 participants, found that specific probiotic strains produced measurable improvements in both depression and anxiety symptoms, though the effect varied depending on which exact strain was used. The researchers noted that gut bacteria changes from probiotics may not always last, which could explain why longer treatment durations sometimes show a bigger effect than shorter ones.

As with any probiotic, this only works if the bacteria are properly fed afterward. A strain introduced to help with anxiety symptoms still needs fibre and plant compounds to establish itself well enough to keep influencing mood over the full course of treatment, rather than fading out early.
A specific nerve pathway and a real human trial
One proposed route for this effect runs through the vagus nerve, the main nerve connecting the gut and brain. A study found that a specific strain, Bifidobacterium longum NCC3001, reduced anxiety-like behaviour in mice, but this effect disappeared when the vagus nerve was surgically cut, showing this particular nerve is a necessary part of the pathway. In humans, a randomised trial testing a different combination, Lactobacillus helveticus and Bifidobacterium longum, found genuine reductions in psychological distress and anxiety-related symptoms in healthy volunteers over the trial period, one of the earlier, well-cited human trials in this area.

Anxiety needs proper diagnosis and, where appropriate, treatment from a doctor or therapist, since standard treatments including therapy and medication remain the established first-line approach and this research doesn't change that.
