Age-Related Near Vision
A specific gut bacterium given orally to ageing rats measurably improved the elasticity of their eye lens.

A stiffening lens, not a growing eyeball
Age-related near vision loss, or presbyopia, is different from short-sightedness. It isn't caused by the eye's shape changing, but by the eye's internal lens gradually losing its elasticity with age, leaving it unable to change shape enough to focus on close objects. It affects the vast majority of people from around their 40s onward, and current treatment is limited to glasses, contact lenses, or surgery, since no medical treatment for the underlying stiffening exists yet.
A gut bacterium tested directly against lens stiffness
A study measured the physical stiffness of the eye lens in rats at different ages, confirming that it increases sharply over time, much as it does in humans. Researchers then gave ageing rats oral supplements of specific gut bacteria strains, Enterococcus faecium WB2000 and Lactobacillus pentosus TJ515, either alone or combined with the antioxidant resveratrol. The combination of WB2000 and resveratrol measurably improved lens elasticity, an effect seen with both short-term and longer-term treatment, while TJ515 alone reduced lens stiffness with longer-term treatment.

An early finding, not yet tested in people
This is a genuinely direct experiment showing a specific gut bacterium changed a physical property of the eye lens, not just a correlation drawn from comparing groups of people. That said, it was conducted in rats, and no human trial testing whether these or similar bacteria improve near vision in people has been done yet. The mechanism proposed is that these bacteria and the antioxidant work together to counter the oxidative damage that contributes to lens hardening over time.
What this means for you
Age-related near vision loss is normal and near-universal with age, and reading glasses, multifocal lenses, or surgical options remain the only established ways to manage it currently. This early animal research is a genuinely interesting lead, and worth watching for future human trials, but isn't yet a basis for expecting a specific supplement to reverse or slow presbyopia in people.
